Traffic has been backed up for several miles, causing motorists to wait more than an hour to reach the New York state line from Norwalk, a 16 miles distance.
A sand truck was on scene cleaning up the fuel spill and a street sweeper was behind to clean up the sand.
Motorists should expect delays until backed-up traffic can begin rolling again.
